Odell Cleveland, known as the “Tambourine Man” is a proud native of Penns Grove, New Jersey, graduated from Finley High School. His success is rooted in the strong work ethic instilled by his parents and coaches throughout his youth, and these values followed him into his collegiate career.
At Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), he met immediate success on the mat.
• Four-year letterman on the ECSU wrestling team
• Co-captain in 1972 and 1973
• CIAA Wrestling Champion in 1971 and 1972
• Member of the NAIA District 29 Championship team (1970–71)
• Key contributor to three consecutive CIAA Wrestling Team Championships (1971–1973)
These accomplishments cemented his legacy on campus and led to his nomination and selection for induction into the ECSU Sports Hall of Fame in the ECSU Hall’s Class of 2025.
Beyond the mat, Odell has shared that his most pivotal transformation came when he embraced faith-“he stopped wrestling with the Lord,” allowing blessings to flourish in both his personal and professional life. This shift brought balance and purpose to his roles as husband, father, and community member.
He married his college sweetheart, Vivian Howard, and together they raised two children—Odell Lamont Cleveland III and Straffai Cleveland-Blake while nurturing a life centered on family, faith, and achievement.
Following his decorated wrestling career, Odell became an inspiring high school coach. His coaching portfolio includes leadership in wrestling, football, tennis, and softball, where he emphasized discipline, character, and teamwork.
Odell Cleveland will be officially recognized by ECSU om November 7, 2025, for his athletic excellence, leadership, and lifelong dedication at the 2025 Sports Hall of Fame ceremony. His induction affirms both his competitive achievements on the mat and his broader contributions as a mentor and community leader.
