The son of James and Catherine Turner, Jamie (JT) Turner graduated from Northeastern High School in 1983. At Northeastern, JT was a standout player averaging twenty-five points every game.

In the fall of 1983, Jamie enrolled at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) majoring in criminal justice with a minor in physical education. During his tenure at ECSU, JT made history on the basketball court. JT was a “Box Office” prolific scorer, who was nicknamed “Sniper” by a fellow member of the men’s basketball team for his precision shots. He was an offensive matchup nightmare for opposing coaches. JT was an unstoppable athlete who was known for numerous buzzer beater shots during his tenure at ECSU.

While at ECSU, JT’s noteworthy accomplishments as a member of the Men’s Vikings Basketball Team were as follows:

  • Led the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in free throw percentage during his freshmen season.
  • Ranked sixth in Division II Field Goal Percentage in 1985
  • First Junior in ECSU’s history to score 1,000 points in his third season (January 26, 1986)
  • Led the Viking Men’s Basketball Team in scoring.
    • 1984: 12.1 points per game his freshmen year
    • 1985: 14.1 points per game his sophomore year
    • 1986: 15.7 points per game his junior year
  • Second leading scorer for the Vikings Men’s Basketball Team averaging 17.0 points per game and 90 percent free throw shooter (1987)
  • Average double figures in scoring for four years at ECSU
After his college years at ECSU, JT served as the head coach for the Elizabeth City Jr. High School boys’ basketball team for two years. Later, JT became the assistant coach for the varsity boys’ basketball team at Pasquotank High School. Additionally, JT worked with the late Coach John Thompson at Georgetown University’s youth summer basketball camp. In 1996, he returned to his beloved alma mater ECSU and served as the assistant coach for the Viking Women’s Basketball Team for three years alongside head coach Vanessa Taylor.

Today, JT serves the City of Elizabeth City in the Parks and Recreation division as the supervisor for grounds maintenance. He and his wife, Pamela, along with sons, Jeremy, and Jamie, live in Elizabeth City. In his spare time, JT loves to fish and listen to music.
