From 2010 to 2014, Nigel Rios was a cornerstone of one of the most successful eras in Elizabeth City State University football history. Recruited by then Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator Dr. Alvin Parker, and playing under Coach Marcus Hilliard, Rios brought leadership, consistency, and elite playmaking to the Vikings' defense.

Over his decorated career, Rios appeared in 41 games, amassing 183.5 tackles, 8 interceptions, and 10 blocked kicks-an exceptional achievement at any level of the game. He made an immediate impact, earning All-CIAA Rookie Team honors in 2010, and followed that with three consecutive First Team All-CIAA Defensive selections from 2011-2013.

Rios helped guide the Vikings to two CIAA Championship Game appearances and an NCAA Division II Playoff berth. In 2013, he capped off his career by helping ECSU capture the Pioneer Bowl Championship with a 28-13 victory over SIAC powerhouse Tuskegee University in Columbus, Georgia.

His junior season (2012) was one of the most dominant in ECSU history. Rios led the team with 94 tackles-first among all defensive backs in the CIAA and top ten nationally in NCAA Division II.

A tenacious competitor and respected leader, Nigel Rios embodied the excellence of Viking football. His contributions laid the foundation for a championship culture and continue to inspire future generations of ECSU student-athletes. We proudly honor his remarkable career with his induction into the Elizabeth City State University Sports Hall of Fame.
