Vikings extend winning streak in five-set thriller win over Shaw

Team boasts continuance with undefeated record in conference play

Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - The Elizabeth City State volleyball team rebounded back in true fashion with an 11-25, 27-29, 25-19, 25-21, 15-12 five-set seat-edging match win against Shaw University on Monday night in the R.L. Vaughan Center in front of the highly engaged crowd of over 400 attendees. The Vikings, now 19-7 overall and 12-0 in CIAA play, completed their ninth consecutive win in conference play and ninth home win as Shaw (14-7, 10-1 CIAA) suffers their first conference loss of the season. 

The Vikings used the depth of their bench to orchestrate their attack with four players posting eight kills or better. Jada Rouse led the team on both sides of the ball posting her first-ever double-double with 13 kills paired with a game, season, and career-best 20 digs; this marks the best defensive output of any outside hitter in the conference. Following not far behind was junior outside hitter Victoria White with an explosive 11 kills. Ashanti Williams came off the bench and pulled her most impressive game this season with nine kills and three solo blocks. The sophomore outside hitter had the best hitting percentage of the Vikings garnering a .563. Junior right-side hitter/setter Elizabeth Kellum contributed eight kills of her own while posting her eighth double-double night of the season touting in 19 assists and 12 digs. Kayleigh Sullivan was no stranger to clearing her own double-double with 16 assists and 16 digs. 

Key Game Components for the WIN
Shaw gave ECSU a serious edge by not being consistent with serving; the Bears offered up 17 points on serves
ECSU posted nine aces; four critical aces in the 4th set that secured the trip to set five
Five Vikings had double-digit digs; the team posted a season-best 83 digs
Although teams were tied in attack errors, ECSU made up for it in blocks shutting out Shaw with 16 denied balls at the net. 


"Could not be more proud of the team for their resilience tonight in coming back from 0-2 down and reverse sweep a really strong and previously undefeated Shaw team." details Head Coach David Brooks.  " Ashanti Williams had her best game as a Viking with 9 kills and 0 errors on just 16 swings hitting .563.  While it feels good to be the last undefeated team left standing we know we are going to get everybody's best shot during these four conference games"

The ladies return back to the Vaughan Center to take on Regent University for Senior Day. The first service is slated for 6 p.m.
