Vikings Fall to Trojans 3-0

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Elizabeth City State volleyball dropped a straight-set decision to Virginia State University (25-17, 25-15, 25-17) on Monday evening inside Williams Hall. The loss snaps a three-game ECSU winning streak, moving the Vikings to 3-12 overall and 3-4 in CIAA play, while the Trojans improve to 7-8 on the season and 6-1 in conference action.

ECSU traded points early in the opening set before Virginia State used a mid-frame surge to pull ahead and take the first, 25-17. The Trojans continued their momentum through the second and third sets, holding the Vikings to a negative hitting percentage while closing out the match in three.

Sophomore Jorja Hoffman led the ECSU attack with seven kills to go along with five digs and two assists. Clarke Blakemore added four kills and a block, while Manuela Yawson chipped in three kills and a block assist. Setter Serenity Lunnermon paced the offense with 16 assists, and Paola Gonzalez anchored the back row with seven digs.

At the net, Andrea Rose was a bright spot defensively, recording a team-high four total blocks, followed by Jalayah Hamby with two.

Virginia State was led by Gracie Darville's eight kills and eight digs, while Leila Jackson added three aces and 10 assists.

ECSU finished with 21 kills, 19 assists, and 26 digs as a team.

Up Next for ECSU:
Elizabeth City State will return to action this weekend at the CIAA Round-Up #2, hosted by Bowie State University. The Vikings open play on Friday, Oct. 17, against the host Bowie State at 5 p.m., followed by a Saturday matchup with Shaw University at 4 p.m.

ECSU will wrap up the event with a Sunday doubleheader, facing Fayetteville State at 11 a.m. and Livingstone at 3 p.m. in Bowie, Maryland.
