Morrow, GA ---- The Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) men's basketball team overcame a halftime deficit to secure a thrilling 76-69 comeback victory over Clayton State in Morrow, GA. Trailing 37-32 at the half, the Vikings dominated the second half, outscoring the Lakers 44-32 to seal the win. With the victory, ECSU improves to 4-2 on the season.
Reggie Raynor led the charge offensively, pouring in a game-high 27 points. Xavier Tubbs-Matthews contributed 14 points and 5 assists, while Michael Eads Jr. added 12 points and 4 steals. Dericko Williams anchored the team with a stellar double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 14 rebounds (5 offensive, 9 defensive), while also contributing 3 blocks.
The Vikings shot an efficient 48.2% from the field (27-of-56) and 45.5% from beyond the arc (5-of-11). They also converted 70.8% of their free throws (17-of-24). ECSU controlled the paint, scoring 40 points inside, while turning defense into offense with 24 points off turnovers and dominating fast breaks with 25 points.
Head coach John Richardson and the Vikings showcased resilience in the second half, tightening their defense and executing on offense to turn the tide against the Lakers.
ECSU now looks ahead to their next challenge as they travel to Richmond on November 29, 2024, to face the Rams of VCU at 7:00 p.m.
