PETERSBURG, Va. -- The Elizabeth City State University men's basketball team fell to Virginia State, 81–69, in CIAA action on Feb. 14 at the Multipurpose Center in Petersburg, Va.
Virginia State jumped out to a strong start, shooting 56 percent from the field in the first half to build a 45–31 lead at the break. Elizabeth City State improved offensively in the second half, scoring 38 points, but the Trojans maintained control to secure the victory.
CJ McCord led the Vikings with 11 points off the bench, while Jaquantae Harris added nine points and five rebounds. Braylon Wheeler chipped in eight points, connecting on two three-pointers, and Donovan Flamer finished with seven points and five rebounds.
Elizabeth City State's bench provided a significant boost, scoring 47 of the team's 69 points. The Vikings also created second-chance opportunities, recording 19 second-chance points and 30 total rebounds.
Virginia State was led by William Hopkins, who scored a game-high 19 points while shooting 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. Jacob Cooper added 13 points and six assists, while Jared Clawson contributed 11 points.
As a team, the Trojans shot an efficient 56.5 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range, helping them maintain their advantage throughout the contest.
