Head Coach John Richardson led the Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) Vikings to a commanding 104-43 victory over Carolina Christian College in their home opener. The Vikings showcased a deep roster, with 62 points coming from the bench and a well-rounded team performance.
ECSU's offensive firepower was led by Kam Johnson, who scored 15 points while shooting an impressive 5/7 from the field, all from beyond the arc. Following close behind, Xavier Tubbs-Matthews contributed 14 points, hitting 7 of his 8 field goal attempts. CJ McCord added 12 points, shooting 5/7, while Dericko Williams scored 11 points, hitting a perfect 6/6 from the free-throw line, rounding out ECSU's double-digit scorers.
The Vikings excelled defensively, forcing 18 turnovers, including 13 steals, and dominating the boards with 30 rebounds. Their ball movement was on full display with 20 assists, facilitating efficient scoring throughout the game. ECSU's shooting was stellar: the team hit 16 three-pointers at a 55% clip and was perfect from the free-throw line, going 14/14, finishing the night shooting 54% overall.
Following the game, Coach Richardson praised his team's unity and focus, saying, "As long as we stay together and work together, we should have a great season. Scoring on transitions and getting stops is detrimental to our success."
ECSU, now 2-1, will return to action on Saturday, November 16, 2024, to face Chowan University at 2 p.m. in the R.L. Vaughan Center at "The Liz." #OnTheRise
