Vikings Improve to 3-1 Defeating Chowan 82-73

Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Vikings men's basketball team secured an 82-73 victory over former conference opponent Chowan University in their home season-opener.

The Vikings improve to 3-1 on the season in non-conference play. 

 
The Hawks fall 1-1 on the season.

Junior guard Zaccheus Hobbs (Maysville, NC) controlled the floor for the Vikings with 19 points. Hobbs knocked down three three-pointers and went a perfect 6-of-6 at the line. Junior guard Justin Faison (Waldorf, MD) contributed 14 points on the night. Senior forward Joseph Allen (Miami Gardens, FL) recorded a double-double 16 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Ty'Jhai Byers (Bethesda, MD) captured a double-double with his 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Vikings had five players end the game in double-digit scoring.


The Hawks were offensively led by Xavier Young with 17 points and defensively lead by BJ Mclaurin with seven rebounds.
 
ECSU shot 54.2 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from behind the arc, and went 12-14 at the line shooting 85.7percent.
 
The Vikings held Chowan to shooting 38 percent from the field, 42.9 percent from behind the arc, and 81.8 percent at the line.

 
The Vikings continue to dominate teams in the paint, outscoring the Hawks 46-10.
 
Four Vikings starters ended the game in double-digits. Freshman Phillip Burwell (Raleigh, NC) led the ECSU bench with 11 points to outscore the Hawks bench 34-13.
 
"I was just trying to do everything possible that I can to help us win," shared Hobbs. "I know I have to do a better job at leadership and step up at the end of game situations to help us win."
 
The opening half endured a pair of ties before a dunk from Byers gave the Vikings an 18-16 advantage with 12:12 left to play in the first half.
 
A three-pointer from the Hawks Xavier Young gave Chowan the 19-18 lead, but Burwell answered back for the Vikings knocking down a three to reclaim the lead 21-19.
 
Both teams battled it out to end the half as ECSU managed to hold on to a 44-40 lead going into the locker rooms. 
 
The Hawks scored five quick points in the second half to take a 45-44 lead over ECSU
 
The Vikings responded with a 6-0 run, but the game would end up seeing its third tie at 50-all with 14:25 left to play.
 
A 12-0 run initiated by Allen gave the Vikings breathing room and momentum midway through the second half.
 
The Vikings held their largest lead of the game up by 15 points 74-59 at the 4:03 mark in the second half, but the Hawks did not fold.
 
Chowan made a few plays don't the stretch, but it would not be enough to come back from as the Vikings claimed the 82-73 win.
 
The Vikings will be back in action on Tuesday at home to take on the Bears of Shaw University. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
