Vikings Welcome in Virginia Union for CIAA North Division Clash

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University basketball teams will welcome in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Virginia Union University into the R.L. Vaughan Center for a Wednesday night doubleheader. The contest will also be Greek Night as the athletic department welcomes all Greek organizations to be a part of promotions and activities that will be going on throughout the evening.

The Vikings are coming off of a doubleheader split of Virginia State on Saturday afternoon. The women won their matchup with the Trojans, 72-59, behind 19-point efforts from Asia Deal and Naterria Luster. Jalyn Brown also poured in 15 in the winning effort. ECSU led the contest from tip until the final buzzer and scored 16 points off of 14 VSU turnovers. ECSU comes into the contest with Union with a 13-8 record overall, a 5-5 mark in CIAA play and a 2-1 in the North Division.

The men fought hard against CIAA leading Virginia State but eventually dropped the contest 69-54. The Vikings were hindered by a rough shooting night from the field as they only connected on 30.2 percent of their shots and 18.2 percent from long distance. The Vikings did jump out to a quick lead in the first half before Virginia State tightened down on defense and limited the Vikings to just 12 points over the final ten minutes of play in the first half. The Vikings will step onto the R.L. Vaughan Center floor with a 10-11 record overall, a 6-4 mark in CIAA play and a 0-3 record in North Division play.

Virginia Union's women's team comes into the contest on fire, having posted nine straight wins following a 62-59 defeat at the hands of Claflin on December 6th. In the Panthers last contest, they defeated Lincoln University 76-40 inside Barco-Stevens Hall on Saturday. The Panthers were led by a balanced scoring attack from Jasmine Carter with 18, Bianca Lockamy with 13, Shareka McNeill with 12, and Ifunanya Okoye with 11 points. The Panthers shot 36 percent from the field and generated 31 points off of Lincoln's 23 turnovers. Union sits at 17-1 overall, 8-1 in CIAA play and 3-0 in the North Division.

On the men's side, the Panthers come into Elizabeth City having won six out of their last seven games, most recently a 78-75 win vs. Lincoln on Saturday afternoon. Union came out sluggish in the game against Lincoln, trailing by as much as 8 in the first half before coming back with vengeance in the second to lead by as much as nine. The key to the victory for Union was limiting the Lions to 25 percent from behind the arc. Deaquan Williams led the scoring attack for Union with an 18-point effort against Lincoln. The Panthers come into the contest with an 11-8 mark overall, 7-2 in the CIAA and 2-1 in the North Division.
