Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, NC (Dec. 17, 2018) – Elizabeth City State used a late spurt to fend off an upset bid by Fayetteville State and earn a 62-57 CIAA win in the Robert L. Vaughan Center.

With the Vikings clinging to a precarious 60-57 lead, junior guard Shykeef Daniels, who finished with seven points and eight rebounds, put back a missed layup with five seconds remaining to ice ECSU's third league victory in five days.  He made a steal on the final play of the game to insure the win.

Sophomore guard Justin Faison led the Vikings (6-7, CIAA 4-0) with 14 points while adding six rebounds and three assists.  Junior center Joseph Allen posted his first double-double with a dozen points and a career-high 14 rebounds while senior guard Shyheid Petteway notched 10 points.

Junior center Tyjhai Byers wreaked havoc on the Bronco attack with five blocks shots while adding nine points and seven rebounds.

Junior forward John Maynor, Petteway and Byers scored buckets during a crucial 6-1 run which gave the Vikings a 57-49 lead with 5:04 left to go.  The Broncos cut the ECSU lead to 60-57 on a jump shot by junior guard Nakia Rivers with 1:19 left, setting the stage for Daniels' heroics.

Sophomore guard Mark Burton connected on three of five shots from beyond the arc to score a game-high 15 for the Broncos (1-8, CIAA 0-2) while sophomore forward Xavier Williams added 11.  Junior guard Denzell Hosch and Rivers, who collared a team-high six rebounds, netted nine points apiece for FSU.

The first half ended with the Broncos ahead 32-31 on the strength of a buzzer-beating trey by Burton.  Neither team could gain control in the period which featured four lead changes and two ties.  After falling into a 4-0 hole, the Vikings put together a 16-2 run capped by a Faison 3-pointer with 15:13 on the clock.  Back-to-back dunks by FSU junior center Will Brown leveled the score at 20-20 with 8:16 remaining.

The Vikings survived an icy six for 15 night at the free throw line by building a 44-32 advantage in rebounding.

ECSU returns to action following the fall semester final examination period with a non-conference doubleheader at Bluefield State on Dec. 30.  The Viking women tip off against the Big Blues at 3 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 5.

Fayetteville State visits UNC Asheville on Dec. 29.
