Men's Basketball to Start Road Swing at Catawba

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University men's basketball team will start a four game road swing through North and South Carolina with a date at Catawba College on Saturday evening at 8 p.m.

The Vikings are coming off of a home opening win against Winston-Salem State on Wednesday night, 69-63. ECSU electrified the R.L. Vaughan Center behind a double-double from junior center Tyjhai Byars who registered 18 points and 13 rebounds for the evening. Three other Vikings registered double figure scoring efforts from John Maynor with 17, Zaccheus Hobbs with 15 and Joseph Allen with 10. Winston-Salem State only led for one time throughout the contest and that was for a 15 second period and the Vikings forced 14 Winston-Salem State turnovers for the evening.

Hobbs is leading the Viking offensive attack, averaging 18 points per contest while shooting a blistering 58.6 percent from the field on the season. ECSU has three other players averaging double figures for the season including Shyheid Petteway with 14.7 points per contest, Maynor who is averaging 13.3 points per game and Byars who is averaging 11.3 points per game.

ECSU has won their last two contests and will try to make it a three game win streak in the contest at Catawba. The Indians come into the contest sporting a 2-1 record of their own, most recently defeating Young Harris on the road, 85-67, on Wednesday night. The Indians also defeated Francis Marion and dropped a close matchup to UNC Pembroke in their first two matchups of the 2018-19 season.

Catawba is being led offensively by Jameel Taylor who is averaging 15.3 points per contest, 5.3 rebounds per game and 6.7 assists per game. Catawba also sports four other players in double figures for the season.
