Men’s Basketball Victorious in Day Two of Earl Lloyd Classic vs. UVA-Wise

Shyheid Petteway paced the Vikings with career best 32 points

Box Score INSTITUTE, WV – Coach Shawn Walker coached to his first win since coming back to coach Elizabeth City State University as the ECSU men's basketball team defeated the University of Virginia College at Wise, 80-60, in day two of the Earl Lloyd Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association-Mountain East Conference Challenge.

ECSU (1-1) had a great shooting night from the floor as the Vikings shot 30-for-53 (56.6 percent) from the floor while limiting the Cavaliers (1-1) to just 20-for-66 (30.3 percent) from the field.

Led by a career best 32-point effort from senior guard Shyheid Petteway, the Vikings controlled both sides of the ball throughout the contest and never trailed. Petteway was efficient on the offensive side of the ball as he went 12-for 17 from the field, 3-of-6 from behind the three-point arc and 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Three other Vikings tallied double figures as John Maynor, Zach Hobbs and Tyjah Byars notched 12, 10 and 10 points apiece respectfully.

ECSU jumped out to an early lead, leading 11-2 in the first four minutes of the contest. UVA-Wise would make a run in the final three minutes of the first half to shorten the deficit down to six at halftime. ECSU would come out on fire in the second half, pushing the lead to ten in the first eight minutes of the second half and ballooning the margin up to as much as 23 in the latter parts of the second half.

The Vikings will open the home slate of their schedule on Thursday as they take the court against Winston-Salem State. Tip is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside the R.L. Vaughan Center.
