Defensive Struggles Plague the Vikings in Loss to Barton

WILSON, N.C. -- Defensive struggles continue to plague the Elizabeth City State University men's basketball team as the Vikings fell to Barton College, 106-87 Tuesday evening in Wilson Gymnasium.

The Vikings ignited a 12-4 run to start the second half and cut into the Bulldog lead, making it a 59-51 contest with 16:31 remaining in the game. ECSU finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from downtown, and 66.7 percent from the candy stripe.

Elizabeth City State recorded 16 points off Barton's turnovers; while getting outbound, 40-32. The Vikings committed 24 fouls, but had 24 bench points.

ECSU went into the half down by 16, (55-39). Elizabeth City State shot 45.9 percent from the field (17-of-37), 25 percent from behind the arc (2-of-8), and 75 percent from the line (3-of-4). The Bulldogs came out on fire, shooting 20-of-36 from the field; while making 55.6 percent.

The Vikings were being led by senior guard Elon Edwards with a team-high 22 points. Junior guard Tioreon Land tallied 15 points and freshman guard John Maynor added eleven. Land was 4-for-4 from the field, 2-for-2 from the line, and was 1-of-1 from behind the arc in the first half. Senior guard Javonte Miles led ECSU with seven boards; while dropping nine points in the effort off 4-of-5 shooting from the field.

The Elizabeth City State University men's and women's basketball teams enter conference play hosting Shaw University at the R. L. Vaughan Center Tuesday, Dec. 13. Tip-off for the women begins at 5:30 p.m., with the men to follow.
