ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Kyree Bethel scored a career high 32 points as the Chowan Hawks cruised to a 71-58 win Saturday afternoon at the RL Vaughan Center.
The Vikings, who fall to 0-6 in the CIAA Northern Division, trailed the entire contest.
Bethel scored 11 straight, including three 3-pointers as the Hawks opened the game on an 11-2 run. ECSU battled within a point, 11-10, with 13:50 left in the first half until back to back three pointers by Mark Anthony Buright and Bethel countered for Chowan. The Hawks led by as many as 17 in the first half before taking a 39-30 lead into the locker room.
The second half was more of the same for the Hawks who, after Bethel opened the half with his fifth three of the night, held a double digit advantage the rest of the way. Chowan's lead ballooned to a twenty point margin, 69-49, with 6:09 remaining in the contest. Bethel drained 8 shots from beyond the three point arc.
Buright finished with 15 for the Hawks (12-10, CIAA 6-6) while Darrell Ward led ECSU with 17 points.
ECSU (9-16, CIAA 2-10) will return to action on Wednesday, February 11 against The Lincoln University at the RL Vaughan Center.
