BOWIE STATE WINS CIAA NORTH, TOPS ECSU 89-77

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Bowie State University placed five scorers in double figures as the Bulldogs earned a 89-77 triumph over Elizabeth City State University Saturday afternoon at the RL Vaughan Center.

Cameron Knox, the newly minted CIAA men's Player of the Year, finished with a team high 17 points to lead the Bulldogs.

Bowie State (21-7, CIAA 13-3) led the entire contest and got off to a fast start with a hot shooting first half. Ten of the Bulldog's 18 made shots in the first half came from beyond the three point arc. BSU was a sizzling 66% from the floor in the first half and 55% overall for the game.

ECSU trailed by as many as 17 in the first half but managed to cut the deficit to ten 47-37 by the intermission.

When a layup by Andre Jackson gave Bowie a 79-60 lead with 7:38 to go, the Bulldogs looked poised to close out a relatively easy win. The Vikings had other ideas as they battled back with a 15-2 run, cutting Bowie's lead to six (81-75) with 4:18 left. The Bulldogs responded with a 8-0 run to close out the game. The Vikings only mustered one field goal, a Brachon Griffin layup with 48 seconds left, over the final four minutes of regulation.

Griffin finished with a game high 23 points while Darrell Ward scored 19, 17 of which came in the second half.

The Vikings have secured the 6th seed in the CIAA Northern Division and must await the official announcement of their opponent. The will begin play on Tuesday, February 24th at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte.
