FAYETTEVILLE, NC- Fayetteville State's Joshua Dawson and Michael Tyson combined for 53 points as the Broncos prevailed over Elizabeth City State University 66-64 Saturday afternoon at Capel Arena.
The two teams battled back and forth for most of the afternoon in a game that had ten ties and nine lead changes Fayetteville State built its biggest lead of the contest with 12:44 remaining where they went in front 49-40. The Vikings responded with a 9-0 run and the layup by Matthew McIntosh at the 10:45 mark represented the game's final tie.
The Vikings moved in front by a three, 58-55, on back to back scores by DeCarlos Anderson the latter coming with 4:34 left. Clayton Cowell then sank two free throws to push the lead to five. Dawson took consecutive trips to the free throw line, where he drained 4 of 4 before Cowell hit a long jumper to put the score at 62-59 in favor of ECSU.
Two more Dawson free throws and an Anderson layup later, the score stood ECSU 64-61 with 1:52 to go. Michael Tyson gave the Broncos their first made field goal in nearly five minutes with 1:23 remaining to pull FSU within a point. After ECSU misfired on their next two offensive trips, Tyson hit the game winning layup and was fouled with 15 ticks on the clock. He converted the free throw and on ECSU's next possession William Tibbs came up with a steal to seal the win.
Stephen Asihene led ECSU with a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Fayetteville evens its overall record at 6-6 and picks up their first CIAA win (1-2).
ECSU (3-6, CIAA 1-2) will return to the court on January 2, 2016 at the RL Vaughan Center against Barton College.
