INSTITUTE, WV- DeCarlos Anderson poured in a career high 28 points but it was not enough as West Virginia State toppled Elizabeth City State 78-68 in the final game of the Earl Lloyd Classic.
The Yellow Jackets used balanced scoring with four players in double figures to improve to 2-0 on the young season. Markee Mazyck led the way for WVSU with a team high 19 points.
After holding a two point lead at the intermission the Yellow Jackets built their largest lead of the game, 50-37, on a three pointer by Mazyck with 14:21 in the game. The Vikings chipped away at the deficit with a 23-10 run and on a Malik Edwards layup with 4:53 to go, the game was tied at 60.
On the ensuing possession, Robert Fomby, who finished with a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds, answered with his only three-pointer of the game to put the Yellow Jackets in front for good. The Vikings led down the back stretch of the first half however a late WVSU scoring burst capped by a bucket at the buzzer by Keith Harris gave the host team a 37-35 halftime lead.
The Yellow Jackets got a big scoring lift from their reserves, outperforming ECSU's bench 36-18 for the game including 21-0 in the first half. West Virginia State was also +12 in rebounding 38 to 26.
Clayton Cowell was the only other Viking to net double figures with 13 points to go along with a team best 5 assists.
ECSU (1-1) will return to action in a non-conference tilt against Winston-Salem State University on Saturday, November 21 in Winston-Salem, NC. Game time is scheduled for 4pm.
