VIKINGS WIN SEASON OPENER; DEFEAT UVA-WISE 73-69

INSTITUTE, WV- DeCarlos Anderson scored all of his team high 20 points in the second half as the Elizabeth City State Vikings held on for a 73-69 win over UVA-Wise Friday afternoon at the Walker Convocation Center.

In the second half ECSU shot at a 50% clip, including 4 of 6 from behind the three point arc, to earn the victory. Clayton Cowell and James Theus also netted double figures with 16 points apiece in the first game of the Earl Lloyd Classic.

The Cavs trailed 26-22 at halftime but rallied to take their first lead of the second stanza, 42-40, on three free throws by Matt Day. After a Zach McDaniel layup, the Vikings countered with a 15-4 run to take a 55-48 advantage with 6:32 left in regulation.

The Vikings fought off two separate Cav rallies, both which trimmed ECSU's lead to just two points over the final 4:48 of the contest.

ECSU held their opponent to just 19 of 56 field goal attempts (33%) including 4-21 from behind the three point line. Matt Day led UVA-Wise with a game high 21 points.

ECSU will close out the Earl Lloyd Classic Saturday at 6pm when they take on the host West Virginia State Yellow Jackets.
