SALISBURY, NC- Livingstone College used a second half scoring outburst to capture a 79-65 victory over Elizabeth City State University Thursday night at New Trent Gym. Darrell Ward scored a career and game high 25 points and collected his third double-double of the season with 11 rebounds.
The first half featured 8 ties and 14 lead changes with both teams shooting a high percentage from the field; the Vikings 53% to 58% for the Blue Bears.
With 8:17 to go in the game and the Vikings facing a seven point deficit, the Blue Bears put the game out of reach with a 15-4 run over a five minute stretch. During that span the Blue Bears were 5-6 from the floor, including a 3-pointer by Eric Dubose that sparked the scoring outburst. Livingstone was also 6-8 from the free throw line over the game's final 8 minutes. Their two missed free throws still led to a basket for the Blue Bears when with 3:59 to go ECSU gave up and offensive rebound on the second attempt and Hakeem Jackson's jumper gave LC their biggest lead of the night, 75-57.
Jackson registered a double-double for Livingstone (8-5, CIAA 2-2) with 24 points and 11 rebounds while Dubose chipped in with 16 points.
The Vikings, who trailed 37-36 at the intermission, scored only 29 points in the second half on 13-33 shooting (33%). ECSU shot 4-10 from the free throw line in the game, a season low for both makes and attempts.
ECSU (9-8, CIAA 2-2) will hit the court again on Saturday when they take on Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte, NC. Game time is scheduled for 7:30pm.
