MURFREESBORO, NC- Mark Anthony Buright scored a game high 21 points to lead the Chowan University Hawks to a 70-66 win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday afternoon at the Helms Center.
The first half had five ties and four lead changes until the Hawks went ahead for good when Josh Mellette sank one of two from the free throw line at the 5:03 mark.
The Vikings trailed 57-43, their largest deficit of the afternoon, with 8:58 left in regulation. ECSU then orchestrated a 21-8 run and on a layup by Jermaine Brown at 1:11 mark, the Hawks' lead was cut to a single point, 65-64.
Kyree Bethel then expanded the Hawks' lead, nailing a three pointer on Chowan's ensuing possession for a 68-64 advantage. Kentrell Key's offensive rebound and put-back with 39 seconds left pulled the Vikings' within a basket until two free throws by Tiron Brown accounted for the final point spread.
Despite shooting a sizzling 63% from the floor in the first half, the Vikings trailed 38-32 at halftime. The Hawks (10-6, CIAA 4-3) out-rebounded the Vikings 40-27 on the afternoon, including 17 offensive boards that led to 19 second chance points.
Chowan committed 17 turnovers that ECSU converted into 16 points however the Vikings shot 14-23 from the free throw line, a 60% clip in the four point setback.
Miykael Faulcon led three Vikings in double figures with 19 points. Kentrell Key finished with 14 while DeCarlos Anderson chipped in with 12 points off the bench.
ECSU (9-11, CIAA 2-5) will hit the court again on Wednesday, January 21st at Lincoln University in Lincoln, PA.
