ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Bowie State's David Golladay hit a running layup with 7 seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs a 66-65 victory over Elizabeth City State University Saturday afternoon at the RL Vaughan Center.
With the win the Bulldogs take sole possession of first place in the CIAA Northern Division with a 4-1 mark (11-11 overall, CIAA 5-6) while ECSU slips to 2-2 overall in divisional play.
Free throws proved to be ECSU's undoing in the one point setback as the Vikings shot 14-23 for the game, including 11-19 in the closing half. They were also outscored in the paint 34-18.
The Bulldogs expanded on their 34-31 halftime by opening the second half on a 9-2 run to take a twelve point lead (45-33), their largest of the afternoon. ECSU then battled back with an 11-1 run to tie the game at 51 with 9:50 to go. The Vikings took their first lead (52-51) since the opening half when Dominique Byrd sank one of two free throws at the 8:04 mark.
With 2:19 to the Ray Gatling drained a three pointer to give the Bulldogs a 62-58 lead before Jeremy Basnight countered a three point field goal to pull the Vikes within a point. A BSU layup and two Darrell Ward free throws later, the Bulldogs held a 64-63 advantage until Miykael Faulcon hit a short jumper with 17 seconds left in regulation
After what proved to be the Bulldogs' game winner courtesy of Golladay, the Vikings last second shot fell short and the BSU escaped with the victory.
Gatling was the game's high man with 26 points while Golladay finished with 12 points, 10 of which came in the second half.
