WILSON, NC- The Barton College Bulldogs earned a season series split with Elizabeth City State University with an 89-67 win Saturday night at Wilson Gymnasium.
Danny Shand and Jake Veasley led the Bulldogs in avenging a loss suffered at the hands of ECSU back on December 9th (80-76) in Elizabeth City. Shand topped all scorers with25 points while Veasley chipped in with 20 points. In the second half the Bulldogs (6-5) blew the game open shooting a blistering 58% from the field and outscoring ECSU 55-37.
Barton held a 34-30 lead at halftime but took control of the game with a 15-6 run at the start of the second half. Their largest lead of the night was a 31 point spread with 4:24 left in the contest. ECSU was held to just one field goal, a Glenn Patterson three-pointer, for the first six minutes of the second half.
Patterson finished the game with 12 points while Darrell Ward scored a team high 16 for the Vikings.
The loss snaps ECSU's win streak at seven games with their last loss coming back on November 22nd (Columbus State).
The Viking offense, which had set basketball nets ablaze during their streak, cooled considerably on Saturday night against Barton. ECSU was only 35% from the floor, hitting only 19 of 54 attempts on the evening.
ECSU (7-6) will return to action when they open up CIAA play on January 1st and the RL Vaughan Center. Game time is scheduled for 7:30pm.
