ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Two Vikings registered double- doubles as Elizabeth City State University took a 60-45 decision from Chowan University Saturday evening at the RL Vaughan Center.
Dominique Byrd scored 10 points and pulled down 14 rebounds and LaShawn Alexander chipped in with 10 points and 10 boards in the Northern Division opener. Miykael Faulcon rounded out ECSU's double figure scorers with 12 points.
The Vikings held the Hawks to a season low 45 points and just 27 % shooting from the field. ECSU's largest lead (25-7) came with 3:46 left in the first half but the Hawks rallied to close the half on a 10-2 run and the Vikings led by ten at the intermission (27-17).
At the start of the second half, Chowan ran off 11 unanswered to take their only lead of the game 28-27 with 17:04 left in the contest. The Vikings then regained the lead for good with an 8-0 run while holding the Hawks scoreless for nearly five minutes. ECSU held a 44-36 rebounding edge and made a comfortable living at the line on Saturday, converting 23-32 attempts.
The Hawks only hit 9-30 shots from the floor in the second half however four of those made baskets came from their scoring spurt that began the second half.
Kortez Smith was the only Hawk to register double figures with 15 points off the bench. Chowan slips to 5-9 overall on the year (CIAA 2-5).
