LATE THREE LIFTS BOWIE STATE PAST ECSU 70-68

Feb. 2, 2013

Final Stats

BOWIE, MD- Byron Westmorland's three-pointer with 47 seconds left proved to be the dagger in the Bulldogs' narrow 70-68 win over Elizabeth City State University on Saturday night.

With the shot clock winding down Westmorland drained the shot from well beyond the three-point arc giving the Bulldogs a 69-66 lead. ECSU's next possession came up empty and the Bulldogs' Carlos Smith sank one of two free throws to push the lead to 70-66 with 16 ticks remaining.

With 10 seconds to go, Angelo Sharpless hit two free throws to pull ECSU within two. Then the Vikings were forced to foul and send Bowie State to the line for one plus the bonus.

Dameatric Scott misfired on the initial free throw and after a rebound by Shaquil Barber, A.J. Johnson's last ditch three-pointer drew contact from two BSU defenders but no whistle blew and the Bulldogs escaped with the two point victory.

The loss is ECSU's first in the CIAA North and halts their win streak at four games. The Vikings trailed 45-30 at the intermission but opened the second half on a 21-4 run to take the lead 51-49 with 15:23 to go. ECSU led by as many a six points in the second stanza.

Sharpless, who sat most of the first half with foul trouble, scored his team high 13 points in the second half while Deon Rice and Glenn Patterson chipped in with 12 points each.

ECSU (13-8, CIAA 6-5) will host Chowan University on Saturday, February 9 at 7pm at the RL Vaughan Center. Visit www.ecsuvikings.com and follow on Twitter @ECSUVikings.
