Final Stats
PETERSBURG, VA- Angelo Sharpless scored a career high 37 points as the Elizabeth City State Vikings pushed past Virginia State University in overtime 91-87 Saturday night at Daniel Gymnasium.
Sharpless scored 14 of his career high in the extra session to help seal the road win for the Vikings.
ECSU had to rally from a 43-37 halftime deficit even after a first half that saw Sharpless open the game with 14 points, including 4-7 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. He finished the evening with a personal game best with 6 made three-pointers.
With the score tied at 71 in the extra session, Sharpless hit the biggest shot of the game, his final three of the night with 3:08 to go. With 2:03 left, he added another score then after a Trojan turnover, Dominique Byrd's jumper in the paint to give ECSU a 78-73 lead.
The Vikings' biggest advantage of the night came in the overtime, 80-73 with 53 seconds left.
The Trojans shot 51% in the first half including a solid 7-10 from downtown. However they were turnover prone throughout the evening finishing the game with 22 miscues.
Between the second half and overtime the Trojans cooled off from long range. They connected on three desperation three-pointers in the final 31 seconds of overtime but the Vikings countered with their free throw shooting to close out the game, going 11-16 from the line.
Freshman Dominique Byrd collected his third double-double of the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds. It is the fifth time in the last 6 games that Byrd has netted double figures in scoring.
Jaron Moore chipped in 10 points and 6 rebounds off the bench for ECSU. Christopher Grier scored 23 points for the Trojans who slip to 12-12 overall and 6-8 in the CIAA.
