Final Stats
ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Vikings survived a double overtime thriller, defeating Chowan University 93-89 Saturday night at the RL Vaughan Center.
ECSU rallied from 36-28 halftime deficit and put up 46 points in the second stanza to force the extra session.
In the second half the Vikings got back into the game from beyond the three point arc. ECSU was 7-16 in two-point field goals but connected on a sizzling 58% from three point land (7-12. The Vikings' three-point barrage was led by 6 made treys by freshman guard Miykael Faulcon, matching his season high of 18 points. His last three of the night tied the game at 74 with 28 seconds left in regulation, sending the game to the first overtime.
The two teams played to a 7-7 tie in the third session.
The Hawks (6-15, CIAA 0-12) opened the second overtime with a three-pointer by Kyree Bethel, his sixth long ball of the evening. Two free throws by Glenn Patterson pulled ECSU within a point until a offensive rebound and put-back by Jaron Moore gave the Vikings a 85-84 lead with 2:06 to go. On their next possession Dominique Byrd's clutch three-pointer from the top of the key with the shot clock winding down gave ECSU an 88-84 lead.
The three may have been Byrd's biggest shot of the evening. However in the second half, where ECSU trailed by as much as 16, the freshman forward scored 11 points of his season high 17 points. He also grabbed 12 rebounds, notching his second double-double of the year.
Chowan got a layup and another three from Bethel with six seconds left but the Vikings countered by going 5-6 in free throws in the final 30 seconds of the contest. Bethel finished with 28 points while Kortez Smith went for a game high 30 points in the losing effort.
Deon Rice led ECSU's scorers with 19 points.
