WILSON, NC- Jaron Moore's offensive rebound and put-back proved to be the game winner as the Elizabeth City State University Vikings came from behind to defeat Barton College at the Barton 45 Second Classic Friday night at Wilson gymnasium.
The Vikings trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half and played from behind the Bulldogs for the majority of the game.
The Bulldogs largest lead of the second half came when Evan Shelton connected on a layup at the 12:52 mark. Behind key offensive rebounding, ECSU would chip into the Bulldogs lead. An old fashioned 3-point play by Brachon Griffin with 5:10 remaining tied the game at 56 and on their next possession a rebound and layup by Darrell Ward gave ECSU their first lead since they led 5-2 at the 18:26 mark in the opening half.
The Vikings would take a the lead by a basket two more times only to have Barton tie the game both times, the latter on an offensive board and tip-in by Chris Fleming with one minute left in regulation.
With 24 seconds left, Moore's put-back of a missed Glenn Patterson floater put ECSU ahead 64-62 and Ward sank one of two from the line to make it a three point lead. Barton missed two three point attempts in the waning seconds and the Vikings held on for the win.
Ward, Moore and DeCarlos Anderson each scored 12 points apiece while Dominique Byrd fell just short of a double-double with 8 points and 12 rebounds.
The Vikings outscored Barton 17-5 in second chance points and 32-20 in points in the paint.
