Final Stats
ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Fayetteville State's Tyrrel Tate scored 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in a 66-63 victory over Elizabeth City State University Monday night at the RL Vaughan Center.
For the Vikings it is their second loss by a three point margin in the past three games, both conference setbacks.
It was a tightly contested battle throughout the game as neither team could pull away from their opponent. The margin the Broncos won by (three-points) represented their largest lead of the night while the Vikings biggest advantage was of six points with 3:06 left in the first half.
ECSU clung to a 26-24 lead at the intermission. The Vikings kept a slim margin on FSU throughout the second half, a stanza that saw the Broncos tie the game on four occasions.
Two free throws by Tate gave Fayetteville State (7-5, CIAA 2-1) their first lead of the second half, 59-57 with 2:45 remaining before a Deon Rice layup tied the game for the final time. On the Broncos ensuing possession Juwan Addison's three-pointer proved to be the go ahead score that his team would not relinquish. The Viking pulled within a point on a layup by Dominique Byrd at the 1:24 mark, but after one of two free throws by Tate, ECSU trailing by a bucket, turned the ball over putting the Broncos back on the line for another free throw and a 64-61 advantage.
ECSU got a steal and a Shaquil Barber layup with 8 ticks left but was forced foul Tate who sank two free throws for the final point spread.
Angelo Sharpless got his seventh double-double of the year with 18 points and 12 rebounds and Miykael Faulcon added 11 points off the bench.
