MURFREESBORO, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Vikings took their Northern Division opener with a 76-69 win over Chowan University Saturday afternoon at the Helms Center.
After trailing 40-37 at the break, the Viking defense held the Hawks to just 8 made field goals in the second half. Chowan got 13 points from the free throw line on 20 attempts in the final twenty minutes.
Deon Rice and Angelo Sharpless combined for 49 points in the contest. Rice carried the ECSU offense before halftime, scoring 13 of his season high 22 points in the first half. Sharpless netted 10 points before the break then exploded for 17 second half points. His 27 points led all scorers and he pulled down a 15 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season.
Sharpless tied the game at 46 with 15:16 left in the contest. Then at the 14:42 mark a three-pointer by Glenn Patterson gave ECSU the lead for the first time since the opening half. Patterson began (a three-pointer at 7:14) and ended (a layup at 1:44 mark) a 16-7 run that gave ECSU a double digit lead 76-64.
Patterson was the only other Vikings to score in double figures with 15 points. Alray Blackmon and Quinton McDuffie both score 20 points each for the Hawks who fall to 5-10 overall.
