ATLANTA, GA- The Elizabeth City State University Vikings staved off a late rally by Morehouse College and held on to edge the Maroon Tigers 79-76 Saturday afternoon at Forbes Arena.
The Vikings led 43-34 at the intermission and by as many as 14 with 9:18 remaining. From that point on the Maroon Tigers outscored ECSU 21-9 and on a jumper by Austin Anderson with 1:51 remaining, Morehouse had trimmed the Vikings lead to a single possession 73-70.
With 1:24 left, Anderson struck again, when he was fouled on a made three-pointer by Deon Rice and converted the free throw to give Morehouse (1-4) their first lead since the first half of play, 74-73. After the two teams traded baskets, Malcolm Frank was whistled for an intentional foul on the Vikings' Jaron Moore with 14 ticks left.
Moore sank both free throws to give ECSU a 77-76 advantage. After the Vikings were granted possession on the inbounds, Morehouse was forced to foul again, this time sending Blake Price to the line for two shots. Price connected on both to account for the final point spread of 79-76.
Darrius Williams' last second three-pointer rimmed out and the Vikings escaped with the three point victory. Anderson led the way for Morehouse with a team high 18 points.
Angelo Sharpless tallied 25 points for the Vikings while Rice finished with 21 points on the evening.
