Final Stats
FAYETTEVILLE, NC- John Herrington's 55 foot desperation heave found the bottom of the net as time expired to give Fayetteville State University a thrilling 79-78 win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday evening at F.J. Felton Arena.
It was the first three point attempt of Herrington's career and it came when his team needed it the most, much to the Vikings' chagrin.
With 2.2 seconds remaining and ECSU clinging to a 78-76 lead, the Broncos' Tyrrel Tate rebounded a missed front end of a one plus the bonus free throw by Blake Price. FSU then called a timeout with two seconds left to draw up a final play which led to Herrington's heroics.
The Vikings led 42-39 at the intermission and held an eight point lead, 74-66, with 6:52 left in the game.
ECSU led the entire second half but could never put any distance between themselves and the feisty Broncos mostly due to poor rebounding. The Vikings gave up 20 offensive rebounds which led to 14 second chance points and were outrebounded 31-44 overall.
FSU (3-6, CIAA 1-1) also made the most of their time at the free throw line to keep it close, shooting 87% (20-23).
The Vikings placed four in double figures with Quintin Spady scoring a team high 24 points. Tim Plummer led all scorers with 18 points for the Broncos.
ECSU (8-5, CIAA 2-1) will return to action when they host Winston-Salem State at the RL Vaughan Center on Saturday, January 14. Game time is scheduled for 7:30pm. Visit www.ecsuvikings.com and follow us Twitter @ECSUVikings.
