ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Paul Goldsmith scored a team high 20 points as the Elizabeth City State University Vikings rolled to an 83-72 win over Chowan University Thursday evening at the RL Vaughan Center.
The Vikings had to overcome an early charge from the visiting Hawks' hot shooting. A three-pointer by Charles Rhodes with 8:58 to go before the break gave Chowan their second seven point lead of the first half, 24-19. ECSU slowly chipped into the lead and on a flurry of defensive pressure closed the half on a 9-0 run to take a 42-31 lead into the locker room.
Although the Hawks (1-16, CIAA 0-9) would shoot a solid 50% from the floor in the second half, they trailed the Vikings by double digits the rest of the way. ECSU held its biggest lead of the night 62-43 on a jumper by Marquie Cooke with 13:10 remaining in the game.
Charles Rhodes topped all scorers with 22 points, which included a perfect 5-5 from beyond the three-point arc.
Omar Jones had his best outing of the season with 19 points off the bench, giving the Vikings reserves a 43-12 advantage for the game.
ECSU (12-5, CIAA 6-3) will travel to face Virginia State on Saturday at 7:30pm in Petersburg, VA. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
