Final Stats
ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Elizabeth City native Kenny White running floater with 8 seconds left proved to be the go ahead score as the Vikings defeated Fayetteville State University 60-58 Monday evening at the RL Vaughan Center.
This was the Vikings' fourth straight game decided by two points. ECSU is 3-1 during that stretch.
The Vikings overcame a six point halftime deficit and converted 13 second half Bronco turnovers in to 15 points. FSU (5-6, CIAA 2-2) committed a season high 26 turnovers in Monday's game.
What turned out the Broncos final score of the game, a layup by John Herrington with 1:12 left in regulation put FSU ahead 58-57. ECSU's ensuing possession yielded a turnover and after a called timeout FSU's Andre Best was fouled and sent to the line for one plus the bonus. Best clanked the free throw and the rebound was corralled by Paul Goldsmith with 39 ticks left.
With 30 seconds to go Marquie Cooke rebounded his own layup attempt but was stripped of the ball by Best and the Broncos burned their final timeout with 25 seconds to go. After the ball was inbounded, Goldsmith was whistled for a foul against FSU's Jarmel Baxter, sending him to the line for two shots.
Baxter misfired on both free throw attempts and the Vikings advanced to the front court calling the game's final timeout with 18 seconds to go.
White's basket, his only field goal of the night, sent the crowd into a frenzy. FSU, out of timeouts, pushed the ball up the floor but an errant pass by Best was intercepted by Trent Bivens, who was immediately fouled and sent to the line. Bivens made one of two shots from the charity stripe for the 60-58 final.
ECSU placed four in double figures with Rondy Tucker netting a game high 16 points. ECSU (8-3, CIAA 2-1) will take on Winston-Salem State University on Saturday at 7:00pm in Winston-Salem, NC.
