FAYETTEVILLE, NC- In a tightly contested contest it was the Elizabeth City State Vikings victorious over Fayetteville State University 75-64 at Felton J. Capel Arena in a nationally televised game.
Two free throws by Anthony Hilliard broke the tenth tie of the contest and with 3:45 remaining and the Vikings clung to a 64-63 lead. Hilliard would put the Vikings up by three on their ensuing possession and ECSU went on to close the game on a 12-1 run to seal the win.
Although the Vikings were out-rebounded 46-37, ECSU made the most of their time at the charity stripe converting 24-36 shots compared to 10-21 for the Broncos (10-5, CIAA 5-4). ECSU also capitalized on 18 FSU miscues converting 23 points off turnovers.
Before his hometown crowd Hilliard scored a game high 26 points. DeJuan Morrison and Jamal Rouse round out the Vikings' double figure scorers with 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
Darshawn Johnson was the Broncos high man with 14 points.
The Vikings (12-2, CIAA 5-2) will return to action on Tuesday, January 20th when they travel to Murfreesboro, NC to take on Chowan University. Game time is scheduled for 7:30pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
