ELIZABETH CITY, NC-The Virginia State University Trojans turned a 40-24 rebounding edge into a 69-65 win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday afternoon in the RL Vaughan Center.
ECSU has now lost back to back home games for the first time since January of the 2006-07season.
The Trojans earned the win with a decisive 17-5 offensive rebounding edge which led to a 15-1 second chance point advantage. Even with their inability to rebound the Vikings led the entire second half until with 2:55 remaining a Michael Johnson lay-up knotted the game at 58. Two free throws by DeJuan Morrison with 55 seconds remaining brought the Vikings within two (65-63) but on the ensuing possession a Michael Johnson corralled an offensive rebound off of a Leon Willis miss to secure the win.
Virginia State (7-8, CIAA 3-4) converted 4-of-5 free throws in the final 30 seconds. Trey Mines led the Trojans with 12 points.
Anthony Hilliard led all scorers with 19 points while Trent Bivens contributed 14 points.
