ELIZBETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Vikings ended a three losing streak with a 77-74 divisional victory over Bowie State University Tuesday evening at the RL Vaughan Center.
After a halftime score which was knotted at 37 apiece the second stanza saw five ties and seven lead exchanges. The Vikings took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Anthony Butler with 4:02 remaining. ECSU notched their biggest lead of the night (5 points) on a jumper by Anthony Hilliard with 27 seconds to go before Gil Goodrich cut the lead to three with a running jumper just seven seconds later. Hilliard pushed the lead back to five after two made free throws with 16 ticks left. A 3-pointer by BSU's Jason Ingram brought the Bulldogs to within two before a foul sent Brian West to the free throw line where he converted one of two shots. Goodrich's last second three-point attempt missed its mark and the Vikings held on for the 77-74 win.
C.J. Pigford led all scorers with 27 points and a team high 11 rebounds while Tyronne Beale finished with a 20 point 12 rebound performance. The Bulldogs fall to 15-8 overall, 11-8 in the CIAA and 5-4 in the division.
ECSU will return to action on Saturday, February 24th as they play host to Virginia Union University for their final game of the regular season.
