PETERSBURG, VA- The Virginia State University Trojans outscored the Elizabeth City State Vikings by twelve points in the second half to take a 83-76 victory in a nationally televised game Saturday afternoon in Petersburg, VA.

With the win, Virginia State (17-7, CIAA 12-5) earns the season sweep over Elizabeth City State. The Vikings slip to 11-14 overall and 7-11 in the conference.

After trailing the Vikings 40-35 at the break, the Trojan shot 50% (11-22) in the second stanza and converted 24 of 26 free throws for the 7-point win. The Vikings also committed 26 turnovers which led to 32 points scored by the Trojans.

The game saw 4 ties in the second half before the Trojans took the lead for good (49-47) via two free throws by Avis Wyatt with 14:48 remaining. From that point on the Trojans were able to do most of their damage from the charity stripe going 21 times, converting 20 shots. On the same token ECSU shot only 11-27 from the field and went 10-12 from the free throw line. For the game the Vikings did out-rebound the Trojans 52-29 and were plus 12 in the paint 34-22. The Trojans' Avis Wyatt led all scorers with 24 points while Michael Askew contributed 19 points.

Both C.J. Pigford and Anthony Hilliard contributed double-doubles in a losing effort of 21 point 14 rebounds and 14 points 10 rebounds, respectively. Anthony Butler added 12 points off the bench for ECSU.
