Jan. 30, 2007

Final Stats

BOWIE, MD- The Bowie State University Bulldogs fought off three separate second half runs by the Elizabeth City State University Vikings to hold on to a 109-101 win Tuesday evening at the A.C. Jordan Arena.

As astounding as the combined final score of the two teams was, the bulk of the scoring came in the second half of play. In the Bulldogs the Vikings were facing two of the top five scorers in the CIAA including the current NCAA Division II scoring leader Gil Goodrich. The other, Tyronne Beale, scored 18 points in the first half, helping Bowie State to a 42-35 halftime lead.

After netting only 6 points in the first stanza, Goodrich showed in the second half why he leads the nation points per game. He exploded for 30 second half points hitting five 3-pointers and sinking 11 of 12 shots from the free throw line. But despite his heroics the Vikings would not go away quietly. After two Jason Ingram free throws at the 12:42 mark the Bulldogs appeared to have the game in hand with their largest, a 17-point lead (71-54).On the ensuing Viking possession, a Devin Mooring 3-pointer ceased a four and a half minute scoring drought by ECSU. The Vikings would then chip away at the Bulldog lead via 19-10 run which brought them to within 5 (81-76). Goodrich and Beale scored the next four baskets giving their team a 13 point cushion. The Vikings responded again with a Mike Land 3-pointer and back to back lay-ups by Anthony Hilliard and Mooring which trimmed the lead to 6 with 5:18 to go. Unfortunately for the Vikings the clock was the enemy as their hot shooting came to late to overcome the seven point halftime deficit.

The Bulldogs improve to 12-5 overall 8-5 in the CIAA and 4-2 in the Division.

ECSU was led by C.J. Pigford's double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds. Hilliard finished with 15 points while Mooring and Anthony Butler, who both netted all of their points in the second half, scored 15 and 16, respectively.

The Vikings (9-10, CIAA 5-7) will host Fayetteville State University on Thursday, February 1st at 7:30pm at the R.L. Vaughan Center. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
