Final Stats
ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Virginia State University Trojans improved to 12-3 on the year with a 94-87 win over Elizabeth City State Thursday at the R.L. Vaughan Center.
Both teams were virtually even in every major category Thursday night except for once glaring disparity. The Trojans took an astonishing 61 trips to the free throw line converting 38. Virginia State's total almost doubled the attempts by ECSU who shot 28-34 from the charity stripe. Offensively the teams went blow for blow as there were 15 ties and 24 lead changes. However the Vikings could not find a consistent rhythm as starting forward C.J. Pigford only scored 2 points in 11 minutes of play because of foul trouble. Pigford was one of four Vikings to foul out of Thursday's contest as Anthony Hilliard, Anthony Butler and Shakiem Mitchell were also disqualified.
Although Pigford's post presence was missed Hilliard, Devin Mooring, and Jamal Rouse carried the scoring load for the Vikings. Before fouling out Hilliard posted a double-double of 25 points and 13 rebounds. Mooring led all scorers with 27 points while Rouse, in his second start of the season, had a career high 13 points.
Four of the Trojans starters, all of who shot a minimum of 10 free throws apiece, finished in double figures with Avis Wyatt leading the way with 23 points and 7 rebounds.
The Vikings (7-7, CIAA 4-4) will hit the road to face Fayetteville State University on Saturday, January 20th at 7:30pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
