Final Stats
ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Livingstone College Blue Bears held off a late rally to edge the Elizabeth City State University Vikings 55-53 at the 2007 King/Witherspoon Classic.
After trailing Livingstone the entire second half, a 3-pointer by Anthony Butler with 3:34 remaining broke a 48-48 tie to give the Vikings their first lead (51-48) since early in the first half. With a 1:59 to go a jumper by C.J. Pigford would give the Vikings a two-point lead. However that was negated on the Blue Bear's next possession when Ivan Jackson hit a three-pointer from the corner to give Livingstone the final lead of the game. After a missed three-pointer by Mike Land, Christopher Worley hit one of two free throws for the final point spread.
The game could have been one that exuded more points had either team been on track from the free throw line. Though they were victorious the Blue Bears shot 42.3 % (11-26) from the line while the Vikings faired only slightly better going 12-27 (44.4%) On Saturday afternoon the Viking set season lows for points (53), free throw percentage, displayed their second worst shooting performance of the year, going just 19-for-55 from the floor.
Michael Duncan led the Blue Bears (3-8, CIAA 1-5) with points while Worley contributed 12 points.
Pigford paced ECSU with 16 points while Anthony Hilliard had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Vikings (7-5, CIAA 4-2) will return to action on Tuesday, January 16th as they will play host to Saint Augustine's College. Game time is slated for 7:30pm at the RL Vaughan Center. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
