Mount Olive, NC----- The Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) Vikings (6-3) delivered a show-stopping performance, defeating the University of Mount Olive Trojans (5-4) in a dramatic overtime battle, 117-113.
The game was spectacular, with ECSU overcoming a late deficit thanks to a jaw-dropping hot streak from Michael Eads Jr. In the final 30 seconds of regulation, Eads Jr. erupted for 9 points, including the game-tying basket to send the contest into overtime at 99-99. In the extra period, the Vikings' depth and star power proved too much for the Trojans as they secured their sixth win.
Notable night performances for the Vikings, first Xavier Tubbs-Matthews had a masterclass performance with 30 points, 11 assists, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals, leading the charge for the Vikings. Next is Dericko Williams with another dominant double-double, racking up 25 points, 15 rebounds, and 4 blocks. His presence in the paint was a game-changer. Also, Michael Eads Jr., was clutch in regulation and consistent throughout, finishing with 25 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Rounding out the leaders is Ali Barry who provided valuable scoring with 14 points and 4 rebounds.Â
The Vikings shot an impressive 57.5% from the field (46-of-80) and a sharp 47.4% from three (9-of-19). ECSU dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Trojans 49-31. Points in the paint and second-chance opportunities were crucial as the Vikings overwhelmed Mount Olive's defense. The win reflects the Vikings' resilience, teamwork, and ability to execute under pressure.
ECSU moves to 6-3 on the season and will turn their attention to a CIAA matchup against the Fayetteville State University Broncos on December 17th. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM.
