Rocky Mount, NC – It may only be July, but football took center stage on Tuesday, July 26
th in Rocky Mount. Officials from Elizabeth City State University and Livingstone College, along with the City's Mayor, gathered together to promote the 25
th anniversary of the Down East Viking Classic. The game, which takes place on September 10
th, is a match up between two teams looking to make an early season statement. In addition, it is a game that all Viking faithful circle on their calendar every year.
The Classic is not just a game but a weekend of festivities and that was evident as ECSU Chancellor
Dr. Karrie G. Dixon and Director of Athletics, James DuBose, Jr. addressed the media. Both discussed the partnership with the City of Rocky Mount and the history of the game. Viking fans will have a number of opportunities to meet the team and coaches, while also celebrating the tradition of ECSU football.
Livingstone Head Coach Sean Gilbert and Elizabeth City State Head Coach
Marcus Hilliard each had an opportunity to discuss the game. As members of the CIAA, they spoke about the respect the two schools have for each other, but also emphasized that they intend to win. "I am excited to be a part of the Down East Viking Classic, not only as a player, assistant coach and now head coach", said Coach Hilliard. "We are ready to kick-off against the Blue Bears and bring home the trophy". That sentiment was echoed by Vikings redshirt freshman Traveon Freshwater, who will be playing in his first Classic game, after transferring into the program.
Tickets are now on sale and fans can purchase them at
www.ecsuvikings.com under the tickets tab. In addition to the game, the weekend will be highlighted by a number of activities, including the first ever Down East Vikings Classic Fan Fest. Stay tuned for updates on how to attend.
