PETERSBURG, Va. – The Elizabeth City State University men's cross country team placed 2
nd after competing in the 2018 Virginia State University XC Fall Opener Wednesday afternoon on the campus of VSU. This was the first time since 2015 at the Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association Pre-Conference meet that the men's team placed in the top two at a competition.
As a team, the Vikings completed the competition with a total time of 2:44.47; while being led by senior runner
Jonquin Elliott with a total time of 30.13.2 and finishing fourth overall. ECSU's runners averaged a time of 32.57, behind host team and today's leaders VSU with a total time of 2.32.07.
Elizabeth City State had two more runners place in the top 10 during the meet, senior runner
Hyshem Staten placed seventh with a total time of 31.28.5; while sophomore runner Gunner Noah placed 10
th with a total time of 32.16.3. This too was the first time since 2015 that the Vikings have had three or more runners place in the top 10 during a single event.

Clifton Pope (17
th/36.59.4) rounded out the ECSU runners. Virginia Union University finished the meet with a total team time of 3:0023 and in third; while Chowan University finished fourth with a total team time of 3:19.45 rounding out the field.
The Elizabeth City State men's and women's teams return to action when they compete in the VSU Trojan Invite Friday, September 21 in Petersburg, Va. on the campus of VSU at 4 p.m.
