RALEIGH, NC- Shaw University snapped a five game losing skid with a 75-65 triumph over Elizabeth City State University Tuesday evening at Spaulding Gymnasium.
The Bears now post a mark of 2-8 overall and 1-0 in the CIAA standings. Senior Joell Hopkins, Jr. tallied 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting to lead Shaw's scoring efforts.
For ECSU, Miykael Faulcon torched the nets on the Bears' home court to the tune of 27 points including 7-11 shooting from beyond the three point arc. As a team the Vikings shot 11-21 from downtown but were neutralized in the post as the Bears outscored ECSU 44-18 in the paint.
Faulcon scored the Vikings' first 8 points after a jumper and back to back three pointers; his second three sparked an 11-2 run for ECSU's largest lead of the game, 19-11, with 10:44 to go in the first half.
The Bears then reeled off an 8-0 spurt to tie the game at 19. The Vikings reclaimed the lead by four (23-19) on a tip-in byMatthew McIntosh yet Shaw made ground over the closing minutes of the first half for a 38-34 lead at the intermission.
Two factors turned the game in Shaw's favor in the second half. The Bears outscored ECSU 20-6 in the paint and the Vikings suffered through a late scoring drought while Shaw twice built eight point margins. The first eight point spread came on the heels of a 10-4 Shaw run where an offensive rebound and put-back by John Savoy gave the Bears a 67-59 advantage with 6:12 to go.
Between three pointers by John Tatum at the 5:57 mark and another three by Dwayne Banks with under a minute to go, the Vikings did not score from the floor or the free throw line.
DeCarlos Anderson was the only other Viking in double figures with 12 points.
ECSU (2-5, CIAA 0-1) will return to action on Thursday against Saint Augustine's University. Game time is scheduled for 7:30pm at Emery Gymnasium
