CHARLOTTE, NC- The Elizabeth City State Vikings captured their first win of the year with a 51-10 road triumph over Johnson C. Smith University at the Irwin Belk Complex.

For the second straight week ECSU tallied over 400 yards of total offense (429) while nearly doubling the Golden Bulls' total output of 264. The Viking backfield averaged 5.3 yards per carry, totaling 170 yards on the ground while netting no negative yardage on the afternoon. Through the air quarterback Creven Powell hit 8 different receivers for 259 yards on 14-23 passing including 3 touchdowns.

Five different Vikings scored touchdowns most notably Reggie Smith who broke the goal line on three separate occasions. Smith had scoring receptions of 33 and 27 yards and for the second consecutive week returned a punt for a score, going 57 yards with 8:44 left in the first half giving the Vikings a 28-7 halftime advantage. Smith totaled 190 all purpose yards on the evening.

The Golden Bulls' lone score came the second quarter when the Vikings were whistled for two penalties (unsportsmanlike conduct and pass interference) giving the home team the ball on the ECSU 2-yard line. One-play later Archie Barrow rushed for the score and JCSU (0-2) added a 38-yard field goal with 14:34 left in the game for their final point total.

Defensively the Vikings were paced by Larry Jones with 6 tackles, 3 sacks for a loss of 15 yards and 3 quarterback hurries. Todd Irving and DeWitt Dixon tied with a team high 7 tackles each.
