ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Vikings edged Shaw University 72-70 Saturday night at the RL Vaughan Center.
With 21 seconds remaining Jamal Rouse put the Vikings ahead for good and broke a 68-68 tie, connecting on a three-pointer as the shot clock expired. Eleven seconds later Eddie Dawson hit a layup to bring the Bears (7-13, CIAA 4-8) to within a point (71-70). Anthony Hilliard was then fouled and subsequently made one of two shots from the free throw line. All in attendance at Saturday's Winter Homecoming game held their collective breath as Rodney Callwood's last second lay-up missed its mark giving the Vikings the two-point victory.
Although ECSU shot a solid 50% from the field, they had a nightmarish night from the free throw line, connecting on only 13 of 29 attempts. The Vikings earn the season sweep of the Bears yet the two games were decided by a combined eight points.
Anthony Hilliard recorded his 50th career double-double with game highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds. Jamal Rouse tied his career high contributing 16 points.
Eddie Dawson paced Shaw with a team high 21 points.
