Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Senior forward
Naterria Luster (Richmond, VA) continues to be the spark that fuels the Vikings in Tuesday night's 63-57 victory over the Hawks of Chowan University.
"It's a very personal year for me," said Luster. "I'm putting the team on my back."
ECSU shot 37.5 percent (21 of 56) from the field, 9.1 percent (1 of 11) from behind the arc, and 57.1 percent (20 of 35) at the line.
Chowan shot 32.3 percent from the field (20 of 62), made 22.2 percent (2 of 9) behind the arc, and went 57.7 percent (15-26) at the line.
Luster poured in 22 points leading all scorers in the contest, while senior guard
Felicia Jackson (Gainesville, FL) followed up with 11 points.
Junior forward
Sireann Pitts (Raleigh, NC) crashed the boards for the Vikings recording 12 rebounds.
The Hawks were offensively and defensively led by Destiny Robinson with a 21 point and 12 rebound performance.
The Vikings ability to out rebound Chowan 26-17 in the first half led to offensive productivity. The Hawks jumped out to a 12-6 lead, and partial credit for the deficit was ECSU's missed free throws. Despite the rocky start the Vikings were able to piece together a 6-0 run tying the game at 12-all off a layup from sophomore guard Aniyah Vanhook (Burlington, NC) at the 1:41 mark.
A jumper from senior froward
Tirenique Broadwater (Rochester, NY) gave the Vikings the lead at 14-12 and ECSU ended the first stanza with a 17-13 edge. The Vikings were able to go on a series of small runs throughout the second quarter, taking a 35-21 lead into the half.
Four minutes into the third quarter, a basket inside from Luster gave the Vikings their largest lead of the contest up by 16-points 41-25 Chowan. The Hawks continued to fight back and managed to cut ECSU's lead down to as few as a 6-point margin, but the Vikings went into the final quarter with a 47-39 lead.
With 43 seconds left in the contest, CU made it a two-possession game, and the Vikings seemed to have lost a bit of their sense of urgency. Despite an up and down fourth quarter ECSU pulled it together and came away with the 63-57 win.
The Vikings will be back in action on Tuesday, November 23
rd, vs Mid-Atlantic Christian University. The contest is set for 11 AM in the R.L Vaughan Center.
