PETERSBURG, Va. -- The Elizabeth City State University women's basketball team fell to Virginia State, 65–33, in CIAA action on Feb. 14 at the Multipurpose Center in Petersburg, Va.
Virginia State built an early lead and never looked back, outscoring the Vikings 15–4 in the opening quarter and extending the margin to 35–10 by halftime. Elizabeth City State showed improvement offensively in the third quarter, scoring 14 points, but the Trojans maintained control the rest of the way.
Alexis Staton led the Vikings with 11 points while adding three rebounds and three steals. Tionna Pettus contributed nine points and a team-high nine rebounds, providing a strong presence on the glass. Jada Clark added four points and a steal, while Karina Scott chipped in three points.
As a team, ECSU struggled to find a rhythm offensively, shooting 20.8 percent from the field and 7.1 percent from three-point range. The Vikings recorded 28 rebounds and forced 11 steals but committed 28 turnovers.
Virginia State was led by Maya Ellis, who scored 13 points while shooting a perfect 4-for-5 from beyond the arc. Gabrielle Gerald added 10 points and six rebounds as the Trojans shot 51 percent from the field in the win.
Elizabeth City State finished with 18 points in the paint and nine second-chance points, while Virginia State capitalized on turnovers, scoring 24 points off ECSU miscues.
