Vikings fall in final road contest to Virginia Union

Box Score RICHMOND, VA – Asia Deal scored a team high 13 points as the Elizabeth City State University basketball team dropped their Northern Division contest to Virginia Union on Wednesday evening inside of Barco-Stevens Hall.

ECSU was limited by poor shooting from the field, only shooting 29.5 percent from the field for the evening. Virginia Union countered that by shooting 52.2 percent from the field and a blistering 54.2 percent from long range.
 
The Vikings also were hindered by turnovers, committing 22 on the evening, and the Panthers turned that into 23 points.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
First Quarter
The Vikings came out and held Virginia Union to no points during the first 3:30 minutes of play but could only muster three of their own off of an Asia Deal three-point bucket. The Panthers would then score 13 unanswered points to take a 13-3 lead. The Vikings kept pace for the rest of the quarter and trailed by 11, 24-13, at the end of the first ten minutes of play.
 
Second Quarter
ECSU started the second quarter struggling offensively as the Vikings went on a 3:04 scoring drought. During that timeframe the Panthers registered six points to lead 30-15. From that point Union outscored the Vikings 19-5 to take the 49-20 lead.
 
Third Quarter
Virginia Union came out of halftime and held the Vikings to without a point for the first 3:49 of the third quarter and scored 11 of their own to lead 60-22. ECSU was outscored 15-8 over the final 6:11 to trail 75-30 at the end of three quarters of play.
 
Fourth Quarter
Over the first four minutes of play in the final quarter, ECSU outscored VUU 12-4. The Vikings continued their hard play throughout the fourth by holding the Panthers to 19 points in the quarter, their lowest amount in a quarter during the contest.
 
NEXT UP
ECSU will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host Bowie State University. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m. and the Vikings will recognize their senior class as well as welcome in faith organizations from around the area for Faith Day at ECSU.
